Colloque international</p>
<p>Le début du XIXe siècle est marqué par de nombreux bouleversements politiques (révolution, monarchie, république, empire), mais aussi par la naissance du Romantisme et du journalisme moderne. Ces événements, qui vont modifier l&#8217;univers et les modalités de la représentation, sont perçus, selon une lecture sociale et politique de l&#8217;histoire littéraire, comme étroitement liés.</p>
<p>Sainte-Beuve, auteur, académicien et critique qui a vu naître la nouvelle ère culturelle et pris part à son évolution, parle d&#8217;une « brusque révolution » dans la mesure où le Romantisme vient perturber les normes académiques et qu&#8217;il est la conséquence de la grande Révolution.</p>
<p>Traversé par l&#8217;Histoire, le texte littéraire tire sa force des histoires existentielles et des parcours individuels dans une dynamique très complexe d&#8217;échanges et d&#8217;interactions.</p>
<p>Penser l&#8217;Histoire, s&#8217;y inscrire, tenter de la modifier et en même temps révéler les mystères de l&#8217;être et sonder l&#8217;inconnu sont les paradoxes auxquels se heurte l&#8217;écrivain et qui font du texte romantique un lieu de tensions. L&#8217;image hugolienne du poète guide ou porte-parole du peuple en est l&#8217;illustration</p>
<p>Le développement du journalisme littéraire (avec notamment le succès du roman feuilleton) rapproche l&#8217;écrivain des lecteurs, favorise l&#8217;engouement du public pour les histoires « ordinaires » et en même temps contribue à l&#8217;émergence du mythe du créateur démiurge, au « sacre de l&#8217;écrivain », selon la formule de Paul Bénichou.</p>
<p>Le colloque portera sur l&#8217;implication concrète et active des romantiques de la première génération (Chateaubriand, Lamartine, Hugo, Sand…) dans la vie politique et sociale de leur temps. Il y aura lieu de s&#8217;interroger, loin des clichés et des à-priori, sur la façon dont les écrivains ont perçu et assumé leur rôle. Leur choix d&#8217;être acteurs plutôt que spectateurs de « la marche des siècles » et la conviction que leur savoir est utile à la nation ne les empêchent pas de porter un regard critique sur le monde, ou d&#8217;avoir un rapport douloureux au réel.</p>
<p>L&#8217;engagement de l&#8217;écrivain romantique va de pair avec une vigilance voire une distanciation qui lui permet de préserver son intégrité en évitant à la fois le repli sur le passé et les illusions de l&#8217;avenir, les rêveries nostalgiques et les sauts dans l&#8217;inconnu.</p>
<p>Trois axes seront privilégiés :</p>
<p>1) définir la nature de l&#8217;engagement, ses orientations idéologiques, épistémologiques, théoriques</p>
<p>2) étudier ses manifestations dans le texte, formes, topiques, motifs, mythes.</p>
<p>3) Soumettre les textes à l&#8217;épreuve de la littérarité.</p>

<p>Conditions de participation : les frais de voyage et de séjour seront à la charge des participants. Les organisateurs réserveront au meilleur prix un hébergement à proximité de l&#8217;université. Frais d&#8217;inscription au colloque : 20 euros.</p>

2 – 4 avril 2009</p>
<p>La Section de langue et littérature françaises de l&#8217;Université Hradec Králové, en collaboration avec l&#8217;Association Gallica, organise, du 2 au 4 avril 2009, un colloque international sur la littérature de jeunesse qui aura pour thème l&#8217;image et ses fonctions dans la littérature d&#8217;enfance et de jeunesse.</p>
<p>Le colloque se tiendra dans les locaux de l&#8217;Université Hradec Králové. Le colloque se déroulera selon les axes géographiques et culturels de la langue française, seront concernées aussi bien la littérature française que la littérature francophone, notamment québécoise.</p>
<p>L&#8217;épanouissement de l&#8217;album pour les petits enfants, des jeux interactifs, l&#8217;expansion de la BD et, pour ne pas oublier, celle des médias et de l&#8217;ordinateur, tous ces faits prouvent l&#8217;importance de la perception visuelle et sa position dominante dans le monde de l&#8217;enfance et de la jeunesse d&#8217;aujourd´hui.</p>
<p>Il est indiscutable que les sensations visuelles ensemble avec celles de l&#8217;ouïe transmettent à l&#8217;enfant la première expérience, celle de base, du monde. Le visuel qui s&#8217;impose partout de façon incomparable est devenu l&#8217;un des rivaux puissants de la littérature même. Alors que l&#8217;illustration accompagnant les poèmes, les contes et les romans depuis des siècles s&#8217;adressait aux lecteurs jeunes tout comme aux adultes, le visuel triomphe dans la bande dessinée, un art qui ne connaît pas de limites d&#8217;âge. L&#8217;image visuelle concurrence le texte. Une image littéraire, considérée du point de vue de la littérature de jeunesse, serait-elle son homologue ou son esclave, son supérieur ou son inférieur ? La description littéraire d&#8217;un paysage, l&#8217;art du portrait proposé par le texte, un univers imaginaire qui ressort d´un discours littéraire, sont-ils moins puissants, moins efficaces que l&#8217;image donnée par l&#8217;art pictural ?</p>
<p>Ce colloque se veut un lieu de discussion concernant l&#8217;image en tant que :</p>
<p>a) illustration &#8211; moyen d&#8217;atteindre une expérience de la réalité et déclencheur d&#8217;un monde fictif ;</p>
<p>b) image et texte : dialogue entre l&#8217;image et le texte, la dualité / la dialectique du texte et de l&#8217;image ;</p>
<p>c) image littéraire et ses fonctions dans la littérature de jeunesse: paysage, portrait, mythe ;</p>
<p>d) imagination et imaginaire, cas spécifiques propres à la littérature de jeunesse.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>University of Basel, 31.8.-1.9.2009</p>
<p>This conference invites scholars to discuss images of illegalized immigration. How do images shape the way we perceive illegalized immigration? Who creates these images? Under which conditions? And where do they circulate? How do they relate to legal and political discourses?</p>
<p>The number of displaced persons is increasing, resulting in various forms of social conflict. In what kind of images are these conflicts presented? How do political and theoretical frameworks as well as social movements transform these images? How can we draw distinctions and find new perspectives amidst these pluralities of images? And how are persons &#8220;de-legalized&#8221; through the use of images?</p>
<p>The goal of this conference is to deal more critically with visual &#8216;evidence&#8217; of illegalized immigration.</p>
<p>We are very delighted to have W.J.T. Mitchell (University of Chicago) give our keynote address. In 1994, W.J.T. Mitchell coined the persuasive term pictorial turn. He is known especially for his work on the relations of visual and verbal representations in the context of social and political issues.</p>
<p>The conference is open to researchers at all levels. We welcome submissions from various disciplines, time periods, and geographic focus.<br />
Abstracts of no more than 500 words (inclusive title), for 20 minutes presentations, along with the applicant&#8217;s C.V., should be submitted to all three conference organisers by 1 February 2009.<br />

<p>This inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary conference seeks to examine and explore issues surrounding visual literacy in regard to theory and praxis. Perspectives are sought from those engaged in the fields of education, visual arts, fine arts, literature, philosophy, psychology, critical theory and theology. These disciplines are indicative only as papers are welcomed from any area, profession and vocation in which visual literacy plays a part.</p>
<p>Papers, reports, work-in-progress and workshops are invited on issues related to any of the following themes;<br />
* the concept and tools of visual literacy<br />
* pre-school children and visual literacy<br />
* visual literacy and cultural identity<br />
* interpreting elements and examples of visual literacy<br />
* visual literacy as therapy<br />
* the liminal elements and facets of visual literacy<br />
* social and cultural reactions to visual literacy<br />
* visual literacy in literature<br />
* visual literacy in television and film<br />
* visual literacy and the media<br />
* visual literacy as a social semiotic<br />
* teaching visual literacy<br />
* visual literacy as deformed discourse<br />
* theology and visual literacy – use and/or abuse<br />
* teleology and visual literacy<br />
* the history of visual literacy</p>
<p>The Steering Group particularly welcomes the submission of pre-formed panel proposals. Papers will be considered on any related theme. 300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday 6th February 2009. If your paper is accepted for presentation at the conference, an 8 page draft paper should be submitted by Friday 5th June 2009.</p>
<p>300 word abstracts should be submitted to both Organising Chairs; abstracts may be in Word, WordPerfect, or RTF formats, following this order:</p>
<p>author(s), affiliation, email address, title of abstract, body of abstract</p>
<p>We acknowledge receipt and answer to all paper proposals submitted. If you do not receive a reply from us in a week you should assume we did not receive your proposal; it might be lost in cyberspace! <p>The conference is part of the ‘Critical Issues’ series of research projects run by ID.Net. It aims to bring together people from different areas and interests to share ideas and explore various discussions which are innovative and challenging. All papers accepted for and presented at this conference will be eligible for publication in an ISBN eBook. Selected papers may be invited to go forward for development into 20-25 page chapters for publication in a themed dialogic ISBN hard copy volume.</p>

<p>1.  Statement</p>
<p>&#8220;Copyright seeks to protect the rights of authorship while securing the dissemination of knowledge. It protects the form of expression of ideas, but not the ideas, information or concepts expressed (.) A regime which is unduly protective of the interest of existing rights holders may therefore inhibit, or even stifle, the development of original material.&#8221;</p>
<p>British Academy, Copyright and Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences, 2006</p>
<p>RIHA, the International Association of Research Institutes in the History of Art, is concerned that recent developments in technology, legislation and practice have meant that the various copyright exemptions that exist to promote the advance of creative and scholarly work are not being applied to achieve their intended effect. RIHA strongly believes that neither copyright nor licensing rules should inhibit the development and diffusion of original scholarly research, regardless of the way in which it is published or otherwise disseminated.</p>
<p>RIHA calls upon copyright holders and other stakeholders including publishers, galleries, museums, and collecting societies, when dealing with scholarly research, to:</p>
<p>- Subscribe to the definition of scholarly research as stated in section 2 of this document<br />
- Apply the existing copyright exemptions in keeping with their intended purpose<br />
- Refrain from demanding or refusing unnecessary permissions, or granting these permissions on unreasonable terms.</p>
<p>RIHA further calls upon collecting societies and monopoly copyright holders, when charging for the use and reproduction of images in scholarly publications, to charge solely the marginal cost to the institution of making the specific reproduction for delivery to the researcher, rather than the costs of creating and maintaining a collection of images or of making provision for a profit margin on transactions.</p>
<p>2.  Definitions of research</p>
<p>For the purpose of clarity, RIHA proposes the following definitions of research:*</p>
<p>Scholarly research<br />
A type of non-commercial research whose principal objective is public benefit rather than private profit and/or the recovery of the costs of the research. Scholarly research may include the initial stages of collecting material as well as subsequent stages which involve the analysis and publication of the results. The presentation of the results will be without charge to the recipients or will be at a charge which can only be expected to cover the reasonable costs of production and distribution, including the reasonable profits of a commercial publisher.</p>
<p>Commercial research<br />
Research whose principal objective is profit rather than public benefit. Commercial research normally includes a charge to the user that covers the cost of the research as well as its dissemination, and includes a profit margin.</p>
<p>3.  Recommendations</p>
<p>RIHA urges copyright holders and other stakeholders to respect of the following British Academy recommendations (paraphrased):</p>
<p>Recommendation 1<br />
Copyright must provide reasonably broad and practically effective exemptions for research and private study, and for criticism or<br />
review.</p>
<p>Recommendation 2<br />
With regard to the exception for research and private study under the 1988<br />
Copyright Act:</p>
<p>a) &#8216;Research&#8217; should be treated as distinct from &#8216;private study&#8217; and should not only encompass the intial stages of an academic project but also subsequent analysis and publication<br />
b) Research should be treated as non-commercial where the taking of copyright material is fair, and where any charge to the user would only cover production and distribution of a publication (including reasonable profit of a commercial publisher)<br />
c) Research funded by a research council or charity is by definition non-commercial<br />
d) In the case of commercial research, charges should be reasonable and abuse should be restrained.</p>

Le thème du dossier porte sur « La presse satirique illustrée au XIXe siècle ».</p>
<p>La rédaction des Cahiers Daumier lance un appel à contribution pour les sections &#8220;Dossier&#8221; de son numéro 5, à paraître à l&#8217;automne 2008.</p>
<p>Cette publication se présente comme un support de travail et de recherche autour de l’art de Daumier et, plus largement, de la caricature et du dessin de presse en France et à l’étranger, du XIXème au XXIème siècles. La revue milite pour une pluridisciplinarité et fait appel aussi bien aux spécialistes (historiens et historiens de l’art, conservateurs&#8230;) qu’aux personnalités du monde de l’art (artistes, collectionneurs&#8230;).</p>
<p>- La section &#8220;Dossier&#8221; est rédigée par des spécialistes sollicités sur un sujet précis. Le thème du numéro 5 est La presse satirique illustrée au XIXe siècle :</p>
<p>Depuis la création de La Caricature par Charles Philipon en 1830 aux feuilles de la fin du siècle (La Lune, L&#8217;Assiette au beurre, Le Grelot, Le Cri de Paris, Le Rire&#8230;), les journaux &#8220;amusants&#8221; ont essaimé en France tout au long du XIXe siècle : connus ou moins connus, ils ont tous eu recours à la caricature et fait appel à des illustrateurs demeurés célèbres : Caran d’Ache, Cham, Forain, André Gill, Hermann-Paul, Ibels, Robida, Steinlein, Willette&#8230; Pourtant, le sujet a été peu dépouillé. Les Cahiers Daumier se proposent donc de revenir sur ces journaux à travers des articles qui offriront un regard nouveau sur des revues déjà connues ou qui permettront au lecteur d&#8217;en découvrir d&#8217;autres.</p>
<p>Les contributions pourront également porter sur des revues satiriques illustrées étrangères.</p>

<p>Depuis plusieurs décennies, les Européens semblent tenaillés par le culte de la mémoire. S’il convient en effet de garder mémoire en histoire, les « abus de mémoire », n’en sont pas moins dangereux : Au-delà de la recrudescence des commémorations qui marque certaines époques, s’organisent des phénomènes de focalisation et de médiatisation mémorielle. Il convient donc de réfléchir, pour éviter de se détourner du présent et de l’avenir, aux relations qu’entretiennent les mémoires avec l’histoire et spécifiquement avec les médias. Le choix se porte ici sur les médias dans leur multiplicité et leurs relations polymorphes à l’histoire, tant il est évident qu’ils ont pu exercer ou exercent une mainmise sur les sociétés et les cultures. On ne se débarrasse jamais de la mémoire même si l’on en fixe une partie dans la pierre ou ailleurs. Bien au-delà de l’intime, elle s’inscrit en force dans le collectif, le social, le culturel et le politique. En ce sens, si ses lieux symboliques peuvent être tour à tour emblemisés ou tomber dans l’oubli, cela implique la sélection et la mise en valeur médiatique d’un moment de l’histoire, passé ou présent, au détriment d’un autre. Pourquoi célébrer le 8 Mai sur les plages de Normandie plutôt que sous l’Arc de Triomphe ? Stigmatiser les violences des Amérindiens au lieu de celles des Conquistadores ? Comment s’est créée la mythification des Révolutions russes ou la légende noire de Napoléon III ? Cet ouvrage doit permettre de déceler  les enjeux, les manipulations, les formes, les représentations politiques, culturelles et sociales qui tissent le fil des relations complexes entre médias et mémoires. Il s’agit donc, à travers les contributions attendues, de proposer dans ce volume des réflexions didactiques et disciplinaires pour mieux préparer à une histoire plurielle et critique, pour donner des repères et mettre de l’intelligible. Finalement, à travers le prisme de la relation entre médias et mémoires, de combiner le sensible avec le sensé.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>CALL FOR PAPERS &amp; CONFERENCE FELLOWSHIP</p>
<p>Guest speaker: Ann Thwaite, Whitbread Award-winning biographer, will speak on Edmund Gosse, author of Father and Son and sometime Librarian of the House of Lords.</p>
<p>The Twenty-Seventh Annual conference on the History of the British Book Trade will take place at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University on 28-30 July 2009.</p>
<p>Papers are invited on any aspect of the production, distribution and reception of print and manuscript in Great Britain. However, provincial-metropolitan inter-trade connections will be acceptable or on aspects of trade relations with any part of the former colonies &amp; dominions. The theme of the 2009 conference will be Collectors, Librarians and the Book Trade, so papers within that area are encouraged, although others will be considered.</p>
<p>The papers presented will be considered for publication as part of the Print Networks series, published jointly by the British Library and Oak Knoll Press.</p>
<p>Papers should be of up to 30 minutes duration. An abstract (of c.300 words) of the offered paper and a brief CV (no longer than one side of A4 in total) should be submitted by 31 January 2009 to:<br />

<p>The Print Networks Conference also offers two annual Fellowships to scholars whose research falls within the parameters of the Conference’s brief, and who wish to present papers at the conference.<br />
The fellowships cover the cost of attending the conference and some assistance towards costs of travel. A detailed submission of the research being undertaken accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a tutor or supervisor should be sent to Lucy Lewis by 31 January 2009 </p>

<p>We invite 300-word proposals for 20-minute lectures on the theme of &#8220;location and dislocation&#8221; in the history of art. The symposium is open to a wide range of historical and contemporary topics on the placement and displacement of artists, identities, artworks, texts, collections, and cultures.  &#8220;Location&#8221; is broadly defined as geographic, temporal, racial, sexual, virtual, invented, or actual.  We welcome proposals from historians and theorists of early modern, modern, and contemporary art of Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas with research interests in architecture, design, visual culture, and cross-disciplinary studies.</p>

<p>Transnationalism, transculturation, diaspora, migrancy, postcoloniality, ethnicity, mestizaje, multiculturalism, creolization, these are only some of the rubrics that literary critics employ as a corrective to the national paradigm of literary study and to call into question singular cultural, national and linguistic allegiances. Such terms are variously evoked in discussions of immigration, mobility, temporary and permanent forms of displacement, and other forms of cultural and geographic flow. Indeed, closely related phenomena connected to globalization are being analysed through divergent theoretical frameworks and the vocabularies that attend these frameworks. This panel will explore the root causes of these divergences in terminology. More specifically, we will ask:</p>
<p>* Do these terminological divergences point to different methods of literary analysis that offer distinct advantages or disadvantages?</p>
<p>* How much overlap or mutual influence exists among these models? Should there be more dialogue between them?</p>
<p>* To what extent do these critical vocabularies reflect divergences among disciplinary traditions or among national, linguistic and regional traditions of literary practice and study?</p>
<p>* Are there tensions created by the movement across fields and disciplines of vocabularies that have specific, local origins?</p>
<p>* What do these terms tell us about particular historical, geopolitical and ideological considerations and their impact on critical discourse?</p>
<p>We invite proposals for papers that will engage with some of the above questions in relation to a range of literary traditions. Please forward your proposals (300 to 400 words) to one of the following organizers by January 15, 2009:</p>
